Bondalti is a world-class chemical industrial producer with extensive experience. Its Estarreja factories produce organic chemicals (aniline and derivatives) and inorganic chemicals (chlor-alkali products), which are mainly intended for export. It is the leader in sales of aniline in the European market and the leader in chlor-alkali production in the Iberian market, a position it has achieved through the opening of its new plant in Spain.
Always mindful of the best practices available, Bondalti seeks to constantly improve its operations and optimise its processes. It has its own technology for the production of aniline and, in the production of chlor-alkali products, it uses the most sustainable, efficient and environmentally recommended technology available.
Main applications
In the area of aniline and derivatives, products such as aniline, nitrobenzene, nitric acid or sulfanilic acid are mainly used in the production of polyurethanes (thermal insulation for construction and for refrigeration appliances, flexible foams, coatings, adhesives and sealants), rubber additives, speciality fibres and pharmaceuticals.
The main products in the chlor-alkali value chain (chlorine, sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite and hydrochloric acid) are used in polyurethane and PVC production, water treatment and purification, textile production, paper pulp, aluminium, cleaning products and applications in the vast majority of manufactured products.
A rich history
Since 2018, Bondalti has been the new identity of the CUF – Companhia União Fabril, whereby its origins and experience date back to the late 19th century.
It all started in 1898, with Alfredo da Silva, when the CUF began its large-scale production of fertilisers. In 1970, this was already the largest Portuguese private group, with a total of 110,000 employees and representing 5% of GDP.
Nationalised and extinguished in 1975, the CUF took on a new life in 1997, when the José de Mello Group acquired Quimigal, which, together with Uniteca (a chlorine and alkali production business, which the Group had owned since 1979), was renamed CUF.
In 2010, the expansion project of the Estarreja Chemical Complex was completed, doubling the CUF’s production capacity.
Continuing their aim of expansion, 2017 was marked by the acquisition of a factory in Torrelavega (Spain), where a new chlorine factory was built.
